Small Things In A Big Way August 11, 2006 "For who has despised the day of small things?" Zechariah 4:10 "For if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed . . . nothing shall be impossible to you." Matthew 17:20 "And Jesus said, Except ye be converted and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 18:3 God uses small things in a big way. The laying of the foundation of the second Temple after the seventy year Captivity seemed small to the Jews compared to Solomon's Temple. Zechariah said it was a big thing because the Messiah would enter this new Temple! The mustard tree seed is ever so tiny. Jesus said that mustard seed faith can move spiritual mountains. He also declared that small children who believed in Him were light years ahead of old men with seminary degrees who exalted reason above child-like faith. God is interested in small things done in big ways. A loving smile to a down cast heart or a kind word to a discouraged soul can make the difference between wanting to end life or trying to continue on victoriously. Small things matter. The African missionary/explorer David Livingston was asked what was the most difficult encounter he had during his years in the interior of Africa. Livingston said, "The gnats!" Gnats in life can "bug" us to distraction. We cannot let the "gnats" of life get us down. Small things matter to God. G. Campbell Morgan was the world renowned preacher of God's Word at Westminster Chapel in London. One of his members shared with him a perplexing family situation she was experiencing. Dr. Morgan asked her, "Have you prayed about it?" She said, "Oh, it is such a small issue that I don't want to bother God about it." The wise minister gently responded, "Madam, pray tell me what is big to God? There is nothing too big or too small to bring to God in prayer." Wise counsel indeed. Small things make big differences. It has been said that trifles make perfection, and perfection is no trifle. Child of God, do not despise the day of small things. A few minutes in God's Word at the beginning of the day can be the key to the filling of the Holy Spirit for your day. A thoughtful response to a personal injustice instead of a snap retort can avert a harsh argument and build a new relationship. One hour over a hamburger with your teenager instead of going shopping alone in your spare time may turn your child from a temptation you knew nothing about. A word of witness to your office co-worker for the Gospel of Christ may save a soul from Hell. Nothing is really small when God is with us! If a sparrow cannot fall to the earth without His knowledge, surely our God of love is watching over our lives. The God Who created us and died for us on the Cross is vitally involved and interested in every small thought and deed. "Holy Father, help me today to do small things in a big way for the sake of others and for your glory. Amen." |
